Gwen Stefani Pushes-up at the Nikon

Posted on Jun 29, 2009

Gwen Stefani shared an encore on No Doubt show at the Nikon at Jones Beach Theater on Saturday night, June 27. The sing along Paramore and Janelle Monae as opening act, the show was showing as female empowerment and show-business.

No Doubt's set ran through their singles, which were mostly played like their recorded versions except for "Excuse Me Mr.," which was transformed from punk to Police-like reggae. In a halter showed off her navel, Stefani started one song by doing push-ups, hip-swinging strut that bespoke total confidence. While, her bandmate, Adrian Young wore lipstick to accentuate the faces he made while drumming, with frequent video close-ups. Tom Dumont on guitar had a new waver’s skinny tie and terse, well-honed guitar parts, while Tony Kanal danced sinuously in place to his own bass lines.

For the opening act Paramore unveiled songs from its next album, "Brand New Eyes," and "Ignorance." Additionally, Monae, a song-and-dance trouper, elaborately embellished version of Charlie Chaplin's ballad "Smile" that she dedicated to Michael Jackson.

Gwen Stefani and No Doubt Bounce Saturday Night Up

Posted on Jun 15, 2009

Gwen Stefani, a 39-year-old mom who could hold her own in a ska-punk circle pit, somehow managed to show up for the reunion tour run with a perfectly flat belly and a full reserve of energy.

On Saturday night by the response from the 17,000 in Burgettstown, Gwen Stefani and No Doubt bounced around the stage for the next hour and a half starting with the ska-pop songs, "Spiderwebs," and "Hella Good," after spirited opening sets by the Sounds and Paramore looking like an Orange Country mod squad in their gleaming whites.

Then, the set was pumped up with upbeat songs such as "Underneath It All," "Don't Let Go Away" and "Ex-Girlfriend," featuring the band members in a cool James Bond-style video. The dance hit "Hey Baby" broke into rap with vocal assists from horn player/keyboardists Stephen Bradley and Gabrial McNair.

Gwen also got her chance to really shine on the ballad "Don't Speak," which also came with an intricate acoustic solo from Dumont. No Doubt pumped the energy up again with its cover of "It's My Life," a gender-bending sing-along on "Just a Girl" and the slow reggae groove of "Rock Steady."

It's hard to watch No Doubt for 90 minutes and not end up at least mildly in awe of Gwen Stefani.

Gwen Stefani Struggles to Write Songs

Posted on Jun 13, 2009

Gwen Stefani has released two platinum pop albums during a five-year hiatus with the band, No Doubt. However, the band has reunited for a tour, but Stefani fears she will never write another hit track again. "I want so badly to write a record. I want to make every other songwriter jealous. But that's not happening right now. I might never be able to write another song," Contactmusic quoted her, as telling Elle magazine. She also said that the priority in her life has changed from music to family after she gave birth to Kingston and Zuma - her sons with rocker Gavin Rossdale. "I always referred to No Doubt as a marriage because that's what it's like to be together for so long and to go through what we've been through. I can't really have that relationship with them anymore. My priorities are always going to be my husband and my family now," she added.
